Rich in Antioxidants

Any variety of fruit or vegetable smoothie is good for you. They provide a good amount of vitamins and nutrients no matter what kind of fruit or vegetables you use. However, there are ways in which you can ensure you’re getting the full benefits from drinking smoothies. The key to the ultimate detox smoothie is to incorporate plenty of water and to ensure it is high in antioxidants. Antioxidant fruits are good for us as they help protect our health by preventing and repairing any damage caused to our cells by excessive free radicals in the body.

Antioxidants are also said to be useful for the prevention of heart disease, cancer, Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease. Green smoothies – literally a smoothie which is green in colour – are high in antioxidants and therefore an effective detox smoothie. There are loads of different recipes for green smoothies using either fruit and/or veg. Brightly coloured fruits tend to be high in antioxidants as well as dark green leafy vegetables.

Fruits Rich in Antioxidants

Fruits which are considered very high in antioxidants include wild berries, cranberries, raspberries, strawberries and both red and green apples. Also anything that is considered a ‘super fruit’ would be a welcome ingredient to a detox smoothie. Super fruits are things such as kiwi fruits and blueberries.

Fruits are generally good for you as they are high in water content and also in vitamin C. They have high fibre content and are super easy to digest. This frees up your liver and kidneys and allows them to detox the body effectively. Citrus fruits rank highly for their cleansing properties; not only do they help clear the skin but the fact they are an extremely water rich fruit means that they help flush the body of toxins. These are all ‘must have’ qualities in food if you are trying to detox.

High Antioxidant Vegetables

The sort of vegetables you would be looking to include in the ultimate detox smoothie should be rich in colour: green, leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, brussels sprouts and broccoli. This is because they all contain high amounts of chlorophyll which is said to purify the blood and cleanse the body. Red bell peppers, corn and eggplant also contain the high amounts of the nutrients we are looking for. So when you add the purifying power of greens and the cleansing power of fruit in a green smoothie, you have a recipe for detox that will effectively cleanse and nourish your body.

One a Day for Healthy Living

Just one of these smoothies a day is enough to leave you feeling noticeably more energised. The health benefits are: manageable weight loss, detoxification, increased consumption of fruit and vegetables, better digestion, antioxidants, increased energy, increased fibre intake, clearer skin and stronger bones.

One example of a green smoothie uses the following:  2 cups of green seedless grapes; 3 kiwi fruit; 1 orange; 2 tbsp of aloe vera juice; 5 romaine lettuce leaves and 2 cups of water. Mixed together in a blender you have the perfect antioxidant smoothie!

Vegetable Detox Smoothie

Detox Pack

The key ingredients in this smoothie are all of the vegetables, which when combined create a smoothie that is high in antioxidants and an array of minerals that keep the body healthy.

Ingredients:

1 Beet
5 Carrots
4 Kale Leaves
1 Apple
½ of a Celery Stalk
½ of a Cucumber
1 Inch of Ginger
1 Handful of Parsley
1 Handful of Dandelion Greens
¼ Cup of Plain Greek Yogurt
2-3 Ice Cubes

Steps:

1. Steam, peel, and slice the beet
2. Cut the carrots into ¼ inch slices
3. Cut the celery stalk into ¼ inch slices
4. Peel the cucumber, then cut it into ½ inch slices
5. Peel and slice one apple
6. Grate 1 inch of ginger
7. Add all of the ingredients to the blender
8. Blend until smooth

Detox Smoothie Tip: Try adding another fruit to this smoothie recipe to make it sweeter while also adding more nutrients.

Cucumber Detox Smoothie

Cucumis Sativus

The key ingredient in this smoothie is cucumber, which is mainly water. Cucumber flushes the body and also has a high count of electrolytes.

Ingredients:

2 Cucumbers
1½ Inches of Ginger
Juice of 1 Lime
½ Cup of Parsley
1 Handful of Spinach
1 Pinch of Cayenne Pepper
2-3 Ice Cubes

Steps:

1. Peel cucumbers, then cut them into ½ inch slices
2. Grate 1½ inches of ginger
3. Add the juice of 1 lime to the blender
4. Add all of the ingredients to the blender
5. Blend until smooth

Detox Smoothie Tip: Try adding ¼ cup of Greek Yogurt to this smoothie to get a boost of probiotics

Apple Cider Vinegar Smoothie

OMG. Apple Cider Smoothie!

The key ingredient in this smoothie is apple cider vinegar, which has many different health benefits. Among its health benefits are liver detoxification and its ability to boost the metabolism.

Ingredients:

3 tbsp. of Apple Cider Vinegar
Juice of 1 Lemon
2 Carrots
1 Apple
2-3 Ice Cubes
¾ Cup of Water

Steps:

1. Add the juice of 1 lemon to the blender
2. Cut the carrots into ¼ inch slices
3. Slice the apple
4. Add all of the ingredients to the blender
5. Blend until smooth

Detox Smoothie Tip: To add sweetness to this smoothie, try adding t tsp. of honey.

Dandelion Fruit Smoothie

Dandelion Detox

The key ingredient in this smoothie is dandelion greens. While dandelion greens have high counts of iron, minerals, and antioxidants, it also is the ultimate liver detox.

Ingredients:

Juice of 2 Grapefruits
1 Apple
1 Cucumber
½ Bunch of Romaine
½ Bunch of Dandelion Greens

Steps:

1. Juice 2 grapefruits into the blender
2. Slice the apple
3. Peel the cucumber, then cut it into ½ inch slices
4. Add all of the ingredients to the blender
5. Blend until smooth

Liver Detox

Detox with Lemon

The key ingredient in this smoothie is lemon. The juice of a lemon can cleanse the liver and aid in digestion.

Ingredients:

Juice of 1 Lemon

1½ Cups of Water

1 Cucumber

½ Inch of Ginger

3 Large Carrots

2-3 Ice Cubes

Steps:

  1. Juice one lemon into the blender
  2. Peel the cucumber, then cut it into ½ inch slices
  3. Grate the ½ inch of ginger
  4. Cut the carrots into ¼ inch slices
  5. Add all of the ingredients to the blender
  6. Blend until smooth

 

Detox Smoothie Tip: Try using the 1½ cups of water to make a Dandelion tea using Dandelion tea bags. Once the tea is brewed, allow it to cool before using it in the smoothie
