Green Smoothie Anyone?

Green Smoothy

Can you get any healthier?

A green smoothie is a smoothie made from green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach and Swiss chard, often blended with fruits. Most people who are on a green smoothie diet believe it is best to use raw fresh ingredients rather than frozen, and that it is best to use fresh fruit juice, coconut milk, water or almond milk for the liquid.

Leafy green vegetables are the most healthy food on the planet; this is because they are absolutely packed full of valuable nutrients, antioxidants and digestive aiding properties, and carry very few calories. Green smoothies are an excellent way of getting greens into your body as you can consume a lot more and a lot easier than if you were to sit down and eat them as a solid meal.

The best thing about making your own green smoothie is that you can control the amount of vegetables that go into it. To start off with until your used to the ‘green’ taste you can add very small quantities of green veg to your fruit smoothie (every little bit helps) and gradually increase the amounts as your taste buds become more accustomed to the flavours.

Natural sweeteners such as honey can be used to improve the taste of your smoothie. Avoid mildly flavoured fruits such as bananas in favour of more richly flavoured fruits such as blueberries, mangos or strawberries, so your greens are not so dominant in taste.

Health Benefits of Green Smoothies

The health benefits of just one green smoothie a day are endless. Green smoothies are very nutritious; they are usually made from around 60% mixed fresh fruit and 40% raw green vegetables and this is an ideal ratio for human consumption. Green smoothies are easy to digest; when the fruit and veg are blended most of the cells are ruptured, making them easier for the body to process. They are also ideal for adults and kids who aren’t keen on the taste of vegetables as they are flavoured mainly by the fruit that is in them.

Green vegetables contain chlorophyll and, according to some dieticians “consuming chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood transfusion.” It contains healing properties for the body. Green smoothies are quick and easy to make. Especially compared to juices; they can take just five minutes. When consuming your greens in the form of a smoothie you are greatly reducing the amount of oil and salt in your diet.

Green smoothies will keep in the fridge for up to three days, which makes them a very convenient snack or breakfast choice. These smoothies are ideal for dieting as they are still considered a complete food because they still contain fibre. Consuming fibre is important to maintain a healthy digestive system. All in all green smoothies are quick, easy and packed with health benefits.
