Berry Delicious Smoothies

Low Carb Berries

When it comes to nutritional benefits of different drinks, most of us don’t stop to think which ones are healthier than others. It’s the same case with different smoothies. If we consider that smoothies can contain almost any ingredients from chocolate to leafy greens to spices, then it is easy to see why some have more health benefits than others. Most smoothies tend to be high in carbohydrates due to their high sugar content, either from fruits or from added sugars. In addition, the fact that they easily digest can make us unaware of how many hidden calories are in a smoothie.
Diets that are low in carbohydrates have become more popular due to the health benefits that people have experienced on them. Studies have shown that most carbohydrate rich foods are addictive and can lead to obesity and diabetes, more so than any other foods.

No matter which diet you are following, delicious smoothies should always be included in it. The good news is that there are many wonderful low carbohydrate smoothies that you can easily prepare at home.

What rules should be followed when making low carb smoothies?

  • Use water as a main base for low carb smoothies. Water contains zero carbs so you can be sure that it is the healthiest option. There are other liquids that you can use if you prefer a more filling smoothie. Use coconut water, milk, yogurt, almond or cashew milk as these are also low carb ingredients.
  • Use Stevia as the only natural sweetener with zero calories. Avoid all sugars, artificial sweeteners, honey or syrups as they all have high carbohydrate content.
  • Choose fruits that are low in carbohydrates. Fortunately there are some delicious fruits that have a low carbohydrate content per serving: watermelon or cantaloupe (12g), strawberry (12g), blackberry (12g), raspberry (15g), papaya (14g), avocado (12g), lemon (6g).
  • To get the best health benefits from a low carb diet use green smoothies. They are a cocktail of vitamins, enzymes, minerals and other important nutrients that help detox and nourish your body.  Green leafy vegetables are your best choice when it comes to low carbohydrate content per serving: kale (7g), spinach (2g), romaine (2g), parsley (4g).
  • Add superfoods that are low in carbohydrates and rich in anti-oxidants: goji berry (24g), carob powder (7g), spirulina (2.4g), acai powder (1g).
  • Add healthy oils to your low carb smoothie. Coconut oil is the healthiest choice, but you can also try grape seed oil or hemp oil. These can make your smoothie more creamy and satisfying, while giving you more energy and vitality.

Here are some low carb smoothie suggestions that have less than 35g of carbohydrates per serving. You can also create your own combinations using the suggested low carbohydrate foods.
