Superfood Smoothie

What is a super food smoothie? There is no set definition of what ingredients need to be included to make a super food smoothie. However, one thing is a must: it must be bursting with nutrients! A lot of smoothies these days are loaded with dairy products and sugar, yet ingredients like this will not allow you to get the most out of your smoothie. A better base would be water, coconut or nut milk. A super food smoothie is an easy way to get loads of extra vitamins, minerals and antioxidants into your diet on a daily basis and it will not take long for you to feel the benefits.

Superfood Explained

If you are feeling daunted by the term superfood you needn’t be. A superfood is quite simply a food that is full of the nutrients that are good for the body. Blueberries are a well-known super fruit; this is because they contain rich concentrations of vitamin C, anthocyanans, and manganese, and have a low calorie content. Other examples of super foods include broccoli, spinach, pumpkin and tomato, all because of their high nutrient content.

There are loads of superfoods out there and it is just a case of doing your research. Even fruits such as banana and pineapple have the vitamins and minerals within for them to be classified as superfoods. The term superfood is not commonly backed by scientists and is considered by many to be nothing more than a marketing campaign; this is because the term can be used to describe any food that has health benefits. This is not a negative, however, because thanks to the fact there are numerous different superfoods, there are numerous different ingredients for your superfood smoothie.

Vegetable Superfoods

Green leafy vegetables such as kale or brussel sprouts are considered superfoods for their nutritional value. Nuts and seeds have also long been thought of as superfoods, as well as citrus fruits, berries in general, vegetables with dark or intense colours (such as beets), peanuts, lentils, beans, dark chocolate and porridge. Basically a superfood is one that is calorie sparse and nutrient dense.

Green superfoods are good for you because they have the highest concentration of easily digestible nutrients, fat burning compounds and vitamins and minerals needed for repairing our bodies. They are also packed with protein and good bacteria to help build muscle mass.

Fruit and Nut Superfoods

Fruit and nut superfoods are high in antioxidants and are therefore generally good for fighting the free radicals in the body. They can also help aid digestion and can help to improve the skin. They will certainly have a high vitamin and mineral count and often claim to boost energy levels. Superfoods do not have to be exotic and expensive fruit and veg. In fact something as simple as an apple can easily fit into the category.

Experiment with your superfood smoothie by trying different ingredients together. It is a fun way of learning about healthy food, and a tasty way to start the day.
