Vegetable Smoothies are veggies with taste

Vegetable Smoothy

Tomato smoothie anyone?

We have been told all our lives that we need to eat our veggies, and for good reason. When you think of fresh smoothies you might think about delicious fruity flavors, but the health benefits of veggie smoothies shouldn’t be ignored. While most fruits have a very high glycemic and caloric index, most vegetables and legumes have much lower ones and they are a wonderful source of fiber, nutrients and anti-oxidants.
You may find it hard sometimes to add enough vegetables to your diet. Eating carrots and celery as a snack may not sound that attractive to you but if you have a good blender, you can make some delicious veggie smoothies with amazing health benefits.

Health benefits of veggie smoothies

Vegetables contain lots of vitamins and minerals which are essential for maintaining good health. Regular consumption of veggie smoothies will produce noticeable effects on your overall health, and here are the main benefits:

  • Reduced risk of developing chronic diseases or cancer
  • Increased vitality which results in more energy available for your daily activities
  • Improved skin and hair health
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Reduced risk of developing obesity

Enjoying a vegetable smoothie doesn’t need to be an acquired taste. If you combine the right ingredients, you will be able to create some delicious smoothies. Throwing together any vegetables that you find in your fridge is not the best way to go about this, so here are a few tips to combining veggies in smoothies:

  • Simpler is better. Try to stick to a few simple ingredients rather than combining lots of veggies that could result in a weird tasting smoothie.
  • Combine ingredients wisely. Use common sense when you combine ingredients for a smoothie. Just as you wouldn’t use garlic and mango in a salad, don’t use them in a smoothie either.
  • Combine colors wisely. Although color might not matter to everyone, a visually appealing smoothie is essential. We can’t properly digest foods or drinks that we find visually repulsing. Try to use the same range of colors when you mix ingredients, otherwise you might get a brown unappealing smoothie.
  • Mix fruits and veggies wisely. The basic rule is to not mix root vegetables with fruits as it may cause intestinal problems. This is especially good to follow by people that have sensitive stomachs or irritable bowel syndrome. Fruits are better to mix with leafy vegetables that are much easier to digest.

Refreshing Cucumber and Avocado Smoothie

Avocado is one of the few fruits that have alkalizing properties. That’s why it goes very well with any kind of vegetables or fruits. Avocado is a great vitamin E source, which is essential for healthy skin, and it also contains essential fats, minerals and fiber.
Cucumber is also very alkalizing and it contains about 80% water so it is ideal to incorporate it into smoothies. It gives a refreshing taste and a creamy texture.

Ingredients for making Cucumber Avocado smoothie

  • 1 medium avocado
  • 1 cup of diced cucumber (peel should be removed if it is not organic)

  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • A few ice cubes

Blend all the ingredients and you will have a delicious smoothie in no time. This is a really nutritious smoothie, ideal for a snack or even a replacement for breakfast as it is quite filling.

Spicy Carrot and Tomato Smoothie

Tomatoes are full of lycopene which prevents cancer and other illnesses due to its powerful anti-oxidant properties. Carrots are also full of anti-oxidants, minerals, fiber, and beta-carotene that are important for good health.

  • 2 medium tomatoes
  • Juice from half a lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • A pinch of chili powder
  • A few ice cubes
  • 2-3 tablespoons of water or as required

Blend all ingredients together until you get the desired texture. Add salt, pepper and chili at the end until you like the taste. This smoothie resembles the Virgin Mary cocktail, but it is more nutritious and tasty.
